SteerSeg: Attention Steering for
Reasoning Video Segmentation
SteerSeg is a new framework for Reasoning Video Segmentation (RVOS) that improves how large vision-language models localize objects across video frames using natural language instructions.
The project identifies a key limitation in existing approaches: attention maps generated by LVLMs are optimized for text generation, not precise spatial grounding.
To address this, SteerSeg introduces an attention-steering mechanism combining learnable soft prompts and Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning prompts.
Built on frozen LVLMs and segmentation backbones like SAM2, SteerSeg only learns lightweight prompts, making it computationally efficient while preserving reasoning capabilities.
Trained on Ref-YouTube-VOS, it demonstrates strong generalization across multiple benchmarks and advances the state of the art in text-guided video understanding and segmentation.
